Based on the international publication – Human Factors and Process Safety Management, Elsevier, 2020, this workshop is about the effective management of human factors in process safety management. For many years practitioners have debated the effectiveness of process safety management systems as opposed to integrated health and safety or otherwise even the occupational health, safety, and environment systems. Clearly each type of system was developed to address a particular requirement or try to prevent a particular set of risks, or otherwise to enhance the risk management processes within an organisation.
Based on two international publications, this workshop is about the effective leadership and governance of HSE matters within organisations and how top management can create high reliability organisations in industries which are generally high-risk industries. While they may not be involved in the day-to-day management of a company, board members influence the tone and safety culture of an organisation by the strategy and policies they approve, through the questions they ask and by holding management to account for effective implementation.
This programme has been developed based on a core text developed by the joint author to deliver over 4 days (or 30 contact hours) a business acumen skill to health and safety practitioners. This is an equivalent of a sort of mini-MBA for health and safety practitioners but incorporates developing the critical skills of experiential and reflective learning.
